As long as you don't short any cables or connections - it your risk though.

Hi, I've read this thread with great interest as my girlfriend's auto 1.6 Scenic is currently suffering from "turns over but won't start" syndrome. Useful pics, and I'm planning on having a crack at this maybe over the weekend.

However, I was under the impression that automatic gearboxes used a liquid coupling to feed power to the driven wheels, rather than a physical clutch? Wouldn't this also mean that the chance of filings from the clutch or flywheel being picked up by the TDC sensor is essentially nil? Or could a Scenic with an auto box still have this TDC problem? I'm planning on checking anyway as it looks easy enough (I hope, with my limited experience and equipment), this is more of a curiosity question.

Cheers!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The starter motor meshing with the ring gear will still cause fillings to be produced,it's definately worth removing it and cleaning it to see if it cures the problem.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Thanks for the quick reply

Good point, I was forgetting about things like the starter motor and other moving parts apart from the actual transmission clutch (e.g. now I think about it it has aircon so I assume there's a clutch in there as well to engage/disengage the AC compressor). Assuming I can get at the thing I'll definitely be checking it, one of the earlier posters said it's a bit of a pain on a 1.6 auto but he's posted some brilliant detailed steps on how he did it. Failing that, I think I can be fairly confident that this is the problem so it may be off to my local independent garage instead where I can at least give them a 99% certain tip-off of what's wrong

I had a go at changing mine on a 1.6 Auto today.

Finally got past all the pipes, undid the bolts & the chuffin thing wouldnt move ! anyone know what could be holding it on

As its in such an awkward place to get to we couldnt see or feel behind it.

Cheers
