I'm going on what the Europ Assist guy said when he got called out to start the car at her house (missed that bit out in the original post!)
And to be fair he was spot on with what he said.
Basically if the ignition key is turned, the glow plug lights go out, but the immobiliser light DOESN'T - not every time. If the immobiliser light hasn't gone out, when the key is turned to start the car, it either makes a relay type "click" or the starter will turn approx twice and then stop. The battery is fine and has been checked.
However if the process explained in my original post is followed if the immobiliser light stays on (ie remove the key, lock the car, unlock it, replace the key and turn it to the second notch) after approx 2-10 tries of this process the immobiliser light goes out and the car starts first time as if there was no problem at all . . . . . . .
