First of all, do the accessories (radio etc.) come on when you insert the card? If not, then the card slot is probably faulty.
Does the starter even attempt to operate? If not, then it could be a faulty gear selector switch (which is why pressing the clutch might sort it) or it could just be a faulty starter motor (I had this happen on my last car, with exactly these symptoms.)
If the starter fires briefly but doesn't start, then try holding the button in for longer. It's possible to get the car into a mode where you have to hold down the start button to crank for long enough to start. Memory's sketchy, but I think you can get out of this by holding down the start button while inserting the card.
