The fancy guage is a current clamp, which he would have used to see the drain and the current pulled when the car was running.
You wouldn't be able to monitor your self with a multimeter unless it
a: had a current clamp on or
b: you were able to place the meter in series with the +ve wire and the current was within the limits or the meter.
Really, I'd suggest a: if you have one or if you know someone with a current clamp, to borrow that. Because the last thing you want to do is start undoing the wiring in your car !! Especially if, with the greatest of respect, you are not familiar with these equipment.
