Yes , this is quite normal on all modern cars. This is so you are not dazzled at night. There is usually a wheel or kn*b ( Obscenity filter seems to get upset if you say kn*b) that allows you to vary the brightness, so you can have the display lights really bright if you like or as dim as you like.

Are all the dials/gauges etc lit up properly, also a blown bulb can make the display dimmer at night.
