My sister had a similar problem with a Senic ... the only way round it was to use the ISO-FIX system... very expensive though.
I nearly had this issue as well on an Espace IV, but ended up using a German car seat (Lift Pro-tect) from a company called Concord ... CONCORD - Kinderautositze
The seats are fairly easy to find in the UK and if you have tall young children these seats are great, unlike the Britax gear which is very good but larger children grow out of the too quickly.
