I haven't tried replacing the sensor myself.
The sensor is located in the passenger side mirror ( UK cars) so you will have to be careful removing thew mirror glass to gain access. As far as I know it is fairly straightforward. Some people cut the iwres and solder the new sensor on. I'm not sure where the connectors are for the sensor, it may be that they are hard to locate that's why people solder them. If you solder make sure the connections are "waterproofed" afterwards otherwise damp will get in and cause more problems.
