I wouldn't regard the noise as being normal. It could be a worn bearing (driveshaft or gearbox)complaining of being under extra load when you go uphill, but if this was the case the same noise should appear if you drive on the flat with a full car of people.
As the noise tends to happen on hills I'm more inclined to think you may have insufficient oil in the gearbox or torque converter, especially if its not holding the car on a slope. I don't know if your model of Renault has a gearbox dipstick or level pulg, I've seen on this forum that some gearboxes are sealed for life.
Has your car had a full service within the past year? What kind of mileage has it done?
