Question Renault - Laguna - Phase II - Dash - Fan and Instrumanet lights.

Hi Folks,

Well I am new to all this on line help and I hope that some of you great people will be able to help out a stranded "Laguna" driver.

How it happened.
As the story normally goes, I was driving down the road!!! With the interior fan on 3 and nice cool air blowing around the car (Car does not have climate control, only Air-Con) when the Fan stopped. A bit bemused tried the usual; turn it to 0 then back to 4 a couple of times to see if it works, you got it nothing.
Thought ok its just a fuse, I can sort that out when I get home. One the way home I had to turn then headlights on and the rear demister, well the dash lights came on but very very dull, with no lights around the fan control area, then further to my amazement The rear demister only cleared about half a centimetre either side of the demisting line at this point the heavens opened on my already bad day!!!!!

What I have done so far.
I have looked at each fuse located in the fuse box to the right hand side of the steering column. All OK!
Looked in the engine compartment fuses (Just above the battery) and they were OK!
I then had a review of this site and found that another fuse was located underneath the front ash tray, again OK.
Also again a review from the site I thought disconnect the battery to see if that works... You got it nothing.

The Car Itself
Renault Laguna 1.8 16v Five door 2001 plate.

I think it could be a short, if so where, or, earthing problem, if it is where is the earthing points around the car!!!

As you can see I am now begging with all you kind people out their please help and give me as much information as possible.

I look forward to any help or advise you have.

Have you checked that the battery terminals are secure and free from corrosion? Also, have you checked the engine compartment fuse box for signs of corrosion or damage?

If you have a multimeter handy, try measuring the voltage from the 'live' side of the demister with respect to a known good earthing point. The bolts for the boot striker plate are usually a good bet, though I'm not sure whether they're accessible without removing trim.

If there's a high resistance in the supply side, then you should see the voltage pulled down well below 12v by the demister element. If you see 12v or more instead, then it does look like a bad earth is to blame. You can confirm this by measuring the negative side of the heating element with respect to the good, known ground.

That should at least narrow down the possibilities a bit, though I'm not sure where to take it from there. This does sound like an odd one.

Cheers for that one, I have tried the batt terminals and fuses, also have tried the votlage side of things, unfortunatley this didn't prove too much.
To rule out the earthing side of things does anybody know where "all" the earthing points are, so I can go around and ensure all of them are clean and making a good contact!!!
