Possibly a dumb question, if Lag 2's with Xenons (have to?)have headlamp washers, why are the washers not tested during MOT?..Dave

Where is that documented? I know NEW cars have to have this by law but I've not found anything that suggests aftermarket fittment requires it.

Makes a heck of a difference over the older halogens.

Mmm..Interesting.

I suppose from time to time we all state as fact things we only befieve to be true. I plead guilty.

I stand by what I said about it being a requirement of the construction and use regs (or their e.u. equivalent), and know for a fact that it is a requirement of the SVA test (if you build a kit car), but no, I cannot say that it is a requirement for aftermarket fit hids.

After a search, I came across this paragraph on the website of http://www.h-i-d.co.uk/:

"LEGALITY
NOTES ON ROAD LEGALITY AND QUALITY OF OUR HID :

Both versions of our HID systems are DOT approved, MOT approved and fully E-compliant in all safety, E.M. emmission and performance specifications. As far as we are aware these are the only HID kits on the market that meet all these requirements.
This makes our kits ROAD LEGAL ; there is a lot of misinformation regarding the legality of HID systems fitted to cars without headlamp power wash and rear axle self levelling ...these are only an E.U. legal requirement on Xenon systems fitted to NEW cars AT THE FACTORY PRODUCTION STAGE .
HID systems fitted as aftermarket accessory DO NOT REQUIRE the car to have power wash or self levelling ; even the DOT get this wrong sometimes .... our expensive lawyers did not ! "

Cheers

Thanks for being so honest. Must admit I did a lot of trauling & only found reference to NEW vehicles.

I too had problems when I fitted one of these systems to my Calibra as one of the lights didn't fire up correctly (original post). I swapped the headlight units over & the fault didn't stay with the light unit - hence deduced it was a wiring issue.

In my aftermarket lights I was able to test the system by connecting the 12V feed to the HID system directly to the battery & it fired up reliably. Hence, concluding it was a power feed issue.

As the Calibra has headlight bulb failure detection my guess is it has a series resistor in the feed to the headlights & monitors the drop across it. Hence, the same resistor limits the start up current & hence the lamp doesn't fire up reliably. Not got round to fixing yet but knowing what the problem is is half the battle!

Take care though & don't touch the output from the power module!!

Hi,

Just taken on a 2003 Laguna 1.9 Dci Dynamique and have a query on the issue of headlights.

I am in the Forces living in Germany and for us to have our cars over here we have to change a couple of bits, Headlights and Fogs.

The fogs are not proble as my car has both sides working, the headlights however do need to go. My UK lights are Xenons but they need changing to LH drive versions.

Without spending the whole hog on new Xenons is it possible to fit Xenon bulbs in standard light sets, if so I can get reasonably priced LH Lights and put my existing bulbs across.

Not being an expert in these matters I thought I would try this forum.

Cheers Spence
