Just had a look at the Carlube 'synthetic' oil . I fear that it is just like many not so expensive so called synthetics that are not synthetics at all, just refined hydro cracked mineral oils. These are better than 'normal' mineral oil being more refined but they are not a true synthetic the way a chemist would describe . They are allowed to be called a synthetic because of a ruling in the USA a few years ago. Confused? Guess thats what they wanted you all to be. Bottom line is you get what you pay for and remember to take a bit away to cover the advertising costs of the big multi nationals. Only a real synthetic will take the heat of the turbo and resist the viscocity improvers breaking down taking the oil out of spec. The reason is very simple, most real synthetic oils dont have VI's or have very little. I really believe that its false economy not to buy the best oil . A figure of 2-8% improvement in MPG is agreed by EU testers as is an upto an unbelieveable 68% reduction in emissions. (if it ain't getting out it ain't bunging up the EGR valve). Simple maths taking the average saving on fuel will quickly show that the oil will pay for itself. When you also consider that the oil will also last at least twice the period you will allow for a normal oil then you are saving big. Never mind the TDI turo / EGR /engine problems. It is rare that the best works out to not only be cheap but save you money, (and the worry). When you consider that a car is the 2nd biggest investment most people make the sort sightedness of using a cheap oil is evident and in the case if the TDI should be screaming at you.
