Smile Renault - Laguna LCD Display - Video link

Hi folks

I have noticed that the cruise control display situated in the centre of the dash may be a small LCD display, if so can it be connected to a minature camera so's to display the rear of the car and a possible aid to reversing?

I can see a number of problems with this:
1) The panel is built into and controlled by the instrument cluster. You'd have to heavily modify the cluster to override the standard inputs.
2) The composite video output of a camera isn't going to be compatible with the inputs of the display. You'd need to build a custom transcoder and driver.
3) The display is pure black and white without even shades of grey (it may appear multi-coloured, but that's just down to backlighting - it's only ever black and a single colour at any given time.) It's also very low resolution. Between these two factors, I reckon a 'live' image shown on the display would be unrecognisable.

Definitely a non-starter, I'm afraid

If it was possible the camera would be stolen within a few hours.

A problem well stated is a problem half solved !

I've actually seen a company in Germany selling an interface box to allow a reversing camera to operate through the renault sat nav system. Basicaly I believe it sits between the LCD display and the navigation system, so it will interrupt the normal display when active. Unfortunately unlike VW, the device doesn't allow for audio inputs ,so there is no chance of watching movies or TV on it , unless you like sub titles and can lip read. Try looking on e bay , the devices are about 100 pounds.
