just had (having) this problem, nicely traveling down A30 in rush hour on monday, then out of the blue the warning light starts to flash, the AA arrived after 90 mins, plug his little gizmo into a socket under the ashtray and then went on to tell me its a random missfire and is a coil as these are aways going.

dont look so worried he said i have these in the van, pop the bonnet and then get him say "oh its a V6, i dont have them"

he reset the light??? and followed me home, today local garage called and they said not sure what one had gone and it would need to go to Renault, having booked it in for tomoz (Thursday) at Wokingham Motors they have quoted 160 for a single coil replacment or 350 for all six

thinking of getting all 6 done as this will give me 12 months warrenty any thoughts on price

sorry to go on a bit

Am I right in thinking that it's only the rear bank that are near impossible to replace? Are the rest easily DIY-able?

If so, then a further option might be to have them replace the three coils on the rear bank, and insist on them giving you back the ones they've removed so you can keep them as spares. This should save you a few bob, and give you a couple of good coils to swap into the front bank if any of them should go.

It depends on whether that's going to save you much money over the original quote. They appear to be charging you at 122 + 38 per coil , so that approach should save you just under 120 quid if they're prepared to play ball.

As a bit of an expert in the art of the missfire (I've had 6!) I was charged 176.77 by my local Renault Garage (Weston super Mare). The coil was 34.84 plus the labour and the VAT.

Interestingly my emissions light didn't come on on this occasion - the engine just felt rough. If you suspect a missfire then check your average MPG on the computer - if it starts to climb its probably a coil . It will go up to 99.9mpg - not bad for a V6!!
