Hmmm, I count myslef fortunate in that my Scenic has the dTi engine and returns around 40mpg in town and nearer 50 on linger runs. When the dCi engine was introduced I remember loads of complaints on forums from people who had gone from dTi to dCi and found economy had reduced significantly. This was supposed to have been fixed a year or two later, so the current dCi 1.9 should be OK for economy. Wonder what tweaks Renault performed on the engine?

Yes, we are quite happy to be averaging 49mpg - and that is mainly just to and from work. The Laguna is also quite a big car.

A lot also depends on how you drive as well - there are many factors that affect economy - not just the engine.

I've just had a go at 'driving economically' on the way home tonight. That's about 30 miles of motorway, which was unusually free-flowing considering it's a Friday evening. I reset the trip when I joined the M602 and stopped taking readings when I came off the M53. The limiter was set to 70 and I only had to brake moderately twice. No stop/start traffic and I managed to maintain 60+ for most of the journey. Feather light use of the throttle and 6th gear for almost all of the way.

The result? 46.3 or 47.0 mpg, depending on which of the two figures you'd rather believe (it kept flitting between the two - yes, the resolution of the fuel economy display is as crap as ever on the 2005 model.)

I also did a test run in the megane this evening.

Filled up at tesco stockport just off the M60, reset the computer and went 15 miles down the motorway. Not heavy on the foot at all and shifting up the gears at lowest speeds possible without stressing the eng. stayed between 60 and 70 mph and managed to get 51 MPG!!!

First time i have ever seen that on the car!!!

After that, i was in urban areas and it dropped down to 35!

My real test will be my trip to coventry in a couple of weeks....

Motorway all the way!
