Lightbulb Renault Laguna II - Phase 1 - Engines - Average MPG from 1.9 DCi Engine

Hi All,
I am just interested to know what everyone here is getting out of there 1.9 DCi engines.

I only seem to be getting about 31MPG on average.
I cannot get it to shift above that.

I donít go over 2k on the revs when driving around town.
The only time it is at constant 2k or over is on the motorway.

It is costing me too much to run the car. At this rate if that is all i am going to get its going to force me to sell up.

I am just wondering if this is correct for the eng / car?

My dCi 130 is only up to 6000 miles, so I'm still hoping that it'll loosen up a bit. It seems to be getting a little bit more life into it (or I'm just getting used to the turbo lag, having only had normally aspirated petrol engined cars before) but fuel economy doesn't seem to be improving.

If I don't bother to reset the trip counter and drive normally (which for me means using most of the useful rev range, and foot to the floor every now and again) it tends to average out at around 35-38mpg. That's mostly motorway miles, mind you - I'm sure it'd be a lot worse around town.

On a free-flowing motorway, with cruise set to 80, it'll generally return about 42mpg in 6th gear. Considering that my 1995 2.0 petrol Laguna would manage around 38mpg in similar conditions, I think that's pretty poor for a diesel. On the other hand, it's better than the very low 30's that my previous 2.0 IDE would do.

Our 2004 120bhp 1.9dci with 22,500 miles on the clock averages approx 49mpg.
This is a mixture of driving, minor roads,A & B roads, and town driving - usually in heavy traffic- an 18 mile journey to work .I do not have a heavy right foot and never exceed speed limits on non-dual carriageway roads but I am not exactlly light footed either.

Even on holiday with a roof box and 1 bike on the roof and 3 bikes on the back we averaged 43mpg over approx 1000 miles, 700 of which with the car fully loaded with the above and coming back we also had a load of wine to fit in the car as well.

I can easily get mid 50s mpg if I sit and cruise at 75mph.

I always seem to get a little less in the winter and put this down to the additives the oil companies add to diesel to stop it "freezing" and the fact that the lights, heater, wipers etc seem to be permanantly on -all using up more "power" from the engine.
