If there are owners of the petrol engine Lagunas looking at this thread I would advise them to also halve their oil change intervals, 18,000 miles sounds much to long to wait between oil changes.

Use synthetic aswell.
Currently in davesss's garage:
2002 Laguna Sports Tourer 1.8 Dynamique Moondust VF1KGOB, Fiat Siecento Micheal Schumaker, Kawasaki KLE M/Cycle and a cheap Mountain Bike.

mmm well I'm at 115k with oil change every 18k - no problems here !! In fact the engine doesn't burn much oil between changes either..

The change of oil spec from 10w-40 to 5w-40 has 2 distinct advantages and some others which lead from these.
A 5w-40 will flow better at lower temperatures, forget the -40 Degs stuff, but from cold start up. This will get the oil to the bearings and importantly the Turbo bearings faster and fractions over time add up.
A 5w-40 oil will generally be of better quality than a 10w-40. This is because only a very refined mineral oil (now controversially allowed to be called synthetic) and a true synthetic oil can meet this grade. This effectively means that you are more likely to have a better oil in your engine.
Moving to better quality oils and especially synthetics will reduce the chances of you having an oil that breaks down quickly and leaves deposits that can reduce flow in small oil pipes that may be feeding the turbo .
In the very latest independent and largest test conducted on 26 makes of oil , all of which have a good name, it was found that about 1/3 of the oils had broken down to the point where they where out of index/ advertised specification. What shocked me was how quickly this happened, results show that this happened within 30 strokes of the test engine! This gentleman shows that what you have carefully selected and paid for may not be there by the time you have engaged gear and started moving.
At service time what do you really have left? no wonder old oil often comes out like water.
You get what you pay for in this world. If these engines are in any way marginal it would be foolish to not give them the best chance that comes with the best oils. These test results are readily available on the home page and while the latest oils tested are not for the Megane the principle is the same.
I think its sad that dealerships have had their margins cut so much that they cannot justify putting the best, ie full real synthetic oil of whatever make, into their customers cars. ‘Its good enough’ clearly isn't good enough even in Renaults books hence the change in recommended oil spec. It would of course be nice to think that your warranty is still valid when the Renault dealer doesn’t put in the Renault recommended grade of oil .

whats your thoughts on using an engine flush or similar to clean the engine before replacing the filter and oil ?

Should i use a treatment like Forte

Really need to do this job this week as at 122k miles my engine in the lag 2 dci is starting to loose power and sound a bit louder than usual.
