Had that happen on 2 gearboxes on an M reg Escort I had, on it's 3rd the mian shaft was sent through the bell housing very weak is the IB5!

That resulted in a loud bang and loss of drive, but I knew when it was going to happen as made a wirring sound first, Just thought here we go again!

Were there any unsual noises heard before the loud bang? Deffo sounds like a new gearbox jobbie though, can't see it being the clutch or half shafts. Especialy if they're fairly new.

If it is the diff which is the most likely thing then your best option is another gearbox as the diff is in the box so box needs stripped to change it and no doubt other parts will be damaged too

Sounds like a drive shaft, got so many different guesses we should have a prize for the winner.

Let us know what it was

A problem well stated is a problem half solved !

Sounds just like the way the drive shaft went in our laguna 1 ph2 and th escenic we had for a short while.
On both of ours it was where the drive shaft goes in to the gearbox on th esplines that had broken/worn i was told that it was fairly commen though our lags went at 156k the scenic went at 67k.

Just heard back from the garage.

The diff plate has sheared off and it needs a new gearbox as the part cannot be replaced seperately.

Warranty is covering but want to inspect first to confirm dealers diagnosis due to cost of repair.

Always buy the extended warranty!!!!
