The rear pads on the piston side were inserted incorrectly by some doughnut!
Have rectified the problem (please see photo)
and have taken car for a test run ...no noise and better performance all round.
On inspection the rear wheels were not hot as they were before.

mister_cee333, thanks for your post....I inspected the operating arm of the handbrake (at the caliper) and all apeared ok...many thanks.
Once again thanks for your help I can now sleep tonight!
