Ultimately in the UK its not about top speed but how quickly the car can accelerate in the sub 100mph band. If you are stuck behind farmer Giles on a country road you want something that you know is capable of getting past him and back on the correct side of the road with the least chance of killing yourself. We've all gone for an overtake that has scared the living crap out of us because a) something has come from the opposite direction, b) somebody pulled out from a side turning or c) i've been driving like a **** and the gap is too small. You want something that you know is gonna pick up really quickly and dispatch the overtake with the least of fuss and panic. For me its not about the 0-60 time its the 40-70 that is more important.
