Brakes - Warning Lights & Pedal Travel

I had the 'low brale fluid' warning light and 'Service' display come on last night on my Espace.

I topped the fluid up this morning and the warning light has gone off. Quick check and I can't see any leaks so I'm assuming (hoping) it's due to the pads having worn low.

Anyay, I'm a little concerned about the pedal travel. It feels a bit soft and if I press harder, the pedal sinks further. I don't think that is quite normal as there should be firm resistance after a 'point' but that point is not being reached.

What could be wrong? I'm think of bleeding the system / flushing it before I do anything else, but any other ideas that I could explore at the same time?
