Rather than wait for a battery to fail it may be prudent to have it load tested. Most decent battery suppliers (not the fast-fit outlets) will do such a test for free. A few years (about Autumn time) back my auto-spark neighbour brought home a brand new Durite battery tester from his workplace and as an experiment we checked the battery in my Clio diesel and sure enough it was displaying poor readings yet the engine started easily first time. Yet just a few months later the battery failed.

There's an old saying in the motor trade. A poor battery will damage a starter motor and a poor starter will damage a battery so looking after the battery can save more than the cost of replacing the battery itself.
