Had the same problem with my phase 2 laguna 1.8. A Renault apprentice suggested fitting a new plug on the throttle body it costs about 25. If you look at the engine from the front of the car it is located at the back left hand side of the engine it is a grey plug with 6 wires going to it. Unclip it and check for corrosion the pins are made from gold so a really good connection is paramount to make the car start.
Another symptom of this problem is the car will start in safe mode i.e the engine revs to approx 2500rpm and the accelerator will not function. It is possible (just) to drive the car like this but it will only go about 25 mph flat out.
The part is available by Renault as it was originally designed as a piece of test loom
Had this done to my car two months ago and absolutely no probs since so good luck
