I'm not 100% sure which way up the bushes are mounted in the wishbones,to be honest..I have changed them before, but it was a while ago....and yes, they are a sod to change!.

Try jacking the car up and try to lever the wishbone away from the subframe with a large screwdriver or pry-bar.The bushes are designed to move a little, but if excessive movement is present then they are worn. Also see if the rubber part of the bush is still bonded to the surrounding metal. They do have a tendency to come unstuck(or de-bonded)......You could also, with the car on the floor, turn the steering slightly and try pushing back against the wheel with your foot to see if any movement is present.

Trouble is,if your car has been to a few garages already, they should have already spotted this.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
