A hot shut down is when say you have been whizzing about (running the turbo ) and for instance go to a pitstop cafe and immediately switch off. the turbo will still be spinning (some do 150,000rpm so take a while to stop) You switch off the engine which stops the oil supply to the turbo bearings..

pretty soon your turbo will be scrap..

Some cars have a secondary electric pump supplying the turbo which stays on for a minute or two after shutoff, why they don't all have one??? Bean counters I guess and more money to be made for new turbos..
