One of my colleagues lives in Derbyshire and he puts a spade, boots etc in his car at the start of winter.

Yes I know, we are quite fortunate. THe best way of telling if its winter or summer in Cornwall is the temperature of the rain. If it's warm rain its summer, if it's cold it's winter.
I know certain areas of the country do suffer more than others with snow,ice etc - the advice given is good advice. Just not sure that changing
to a winter grade is necessary in any part of the UK.
