megane abs ring

For a change I'm asking advice instead of giving it! Whilst changing a clutch on a megane series 2 petrol the ring which holds the front abs sensor fell off as I removed the driveshaft. I could see this shaft had recently been out (new nut new gaiter) and the ring was a bit battered. I got a new wheel bearing kit in order to get a new ring. I took the hub off but found that the ring will not easily fit the hub. I resorted to placing it over the end of the cv joint and holding it in position while I tightened the nut. On reassembly the abs light is on. Do I need to remove the hub again and tap the ring in further. If so how far does the ring have to go in? The abs activating ring being in the bearing is an unfamiliar system to me so I'm struggling like a novice here!
