Worth noting that on the rear discs, it has a very small wear amount of only 1mm, 0.5mm per side of disc before disc is considered worn out, seems stupid but any more and its liable to warping, cracking etc, even new discs have a minimum thickness stamped onto them.

So by the time you get through 1 set of pads usually, its time for a new set of discs.

Fronts give you slightly more tolerance as they are vented, 2mm wear or 1mm per side.

Don't know why they couldn't disengage the handbrake, a garage should posess diagnostic equipment which should be able to do it, but failing that as above there is the method described above. I just did some pads and discs for somebody other day, used the diagnostic equipment to disengage the handbrake and because old pads had seized into the carriers spent 2 hours per side disassembling, cleaning and reassembling to ensure proper braking operation. Stripped down the carriers, removed the inserts, cleaned it all. Very time consuming but needs doing properly as brakes are brakes and If not properly cleaned up pads will seize or wear uneven.
