Megane 1, removal & reinstallation of wheel hub/wheel bearing

Don't know if this helps but I just did the front wheel bearing on my 99 Megane Sport. Here's what I noted so next time it won't take me all day.
Tools Needed: Lump hammer, block of wood; ½” breaker bar; 30mm socket; WD-40; socket set; various spanners.

Removal & Reinstallation of wheel hub/wheel bearing:
  • Before jacking up car, remove centre cover from wheel. Loosen central driveshaft hub nut slightly with 1/2” breaker bar and 30mm socket.
  • Jack up car and put on jack stands.
  • Remove the brake calliper (2 bolts from back side) and put out of the way. Under no circumstances should you remove the brake lines; leave these in place or you’ll have to bleed the brakes.
  • Remove brake disc (2 torx head screws in front of disc); may have to tap off from behind with block of wood and lump hammer.
  • Take jack from under car, leaving the car on jack stands. Put jack under shaft that controls wheel steering (left side of wheel) and jack up to put some tension on the bottom of the bracket. This will stop the ball joint from rotating allowing you to take off the nut from top of joint.
  • Unbolt nut/bolt from bottom of hub and tap out (bottom ball joint); if tight, leave nut on the end of the bolt and tap it out so as not to ruin the threads.
  • Free off the bottom ball joint by inserting breaker bar behind shock absorber on wishbone and prying down. This should move straight down, freeing up the bottom ball joint.
  • Remove carrier bracket (2 large nuts/bolts from front of shock absorber)
  • Remove ABS sensor (or if rusted, unplug it at fender well).
  • Remove 30mm hub nut.
  • Tap on drive shaft in with block of wood; be careful not to pull it out all the way or it will disconnect from the engine.
  • Remove hub.
  • Replace wheel bearing (take it to a garage and pay them to do it on a press; around £15).
  • To replace hub, slide it over the drive shaft and insert the carrier bracket bolts on top of hub/shock absorber. Can finger-tighten these for now just to hold the hub in place.
  • Put on 30mm hub nut and tighten enough to hold drive shaft in place (snug fit; tighten this down all the way once wheel is back on).
  • Fit pry bar under wishbone and re-insert the bottom ball joint into hole; re-insert bolt & nut.
  • Make sure jack is under the wheel steering strut to put some tension on; re-install in hole and tighten down top nut.
  • Plug in ABS sensor.
  • Reinstall brake disc and tighten down 2 torx head screws.
  • Reinstall brake calliper and tighten down 2 bolts.
  • Replace wheel; let down jack so car is resting on all 4 tyres.
  • Tighten down hub nut all the way using ½” breaker bar and 30mm socket.
  • Test drive.

Very well put mate and i know it's not the quickest of jobs but you do get job satisfaction when you do these jobs yourself as i found out when i did mine a couple of years ago but when i did mine my son and i got some second hand hubs from the breakers and had the new bearings put in them then swapped them with the original one's as didn't like the car being on axle stands to long with the drive way being uneven .

Thumbs up Re: Megane 1, removal & reinstallation of wheel hub/wheel bearing

Wow, I was thinking about doing this job after successfully completing a ball joint replacement a few weeks ago. With these instructions, i'll definately give it a go.
Thanks for taking the time to share this info!

Re: Megane 1, removal & reinstallation of wheel hub/wheel bearing

Nice post, followed all the advice and all went according to plan until the I tried to tap the driveshaft out from the carrier! There was no human way of getting the driveshaft out by hitting it. So I tried a thirty ton press I have access to at work and still to no avail. all that I managed to do is break one of the brake caliper lugs clean off. I need the car back on the road urgently, so I guess I'll be off to our friendly machine shop and get them to do the dirty work, pull the shaft out, hopefully without destroying the bearings, and weld the lug back into place. I had a look at the service manual I have on hand and they use locktight to keep the shaft in place, but it shouldn't be that difficult to separate, should it .

Re: Megane 1, removal & reinstallation of wheel hub/wheel bearing

on my 1.6 the driveshaft comes out easily with a couple of taps - with the rest of the stuff unbolted etc, the shaft is "loose" in the gearbox, tap the shaft in the centre of the hub with a hammer and it goes backwards towards the gearbox ?

where in spain are you stu? im in malaga
