Re: Megane 1 faults

the bad earth connection on the rear lights is a common problem but easy to fix, just clean up the connections on the plug with some emricloth and it should cure it.

on an unrelated note, my megane has developed a misfire when idling but if i blip the accelerator the injection warning light comes on n the misfire goes. anybody else had this problem? if so can you give me some ideas of what to check for? ive changed the spark plugs and ht leads and tried a new coil pack on it but had no joy

Re: Megane 1 faults

We have got a '51 plate 1.6 expression. 58000 miles. Been really good so far, had the car 5 years. Have had a few problems - 2 years ago a rear shock absorber BROKE. I put this down to the amount of speed humps and the disgusting state of the roads where we live (Wife's car - rarely leaves town) A couple of years ago also we had the ign coils replaced as it was suddenly running badly - I did not have time to do it so garage did it - they said they have to be replaced in pairs but I was dubious. Just under a year later the same thing happened - the garage replaced them under warranty. On Monday this week it went again! this time I bought one coil from local motor shop 25. I hoped to tell which was faulty by measuring the resistance on the input connectors - but they were all 0.8 ohm - including the new one. So I decided to substitute one at a time. Luckily it was the second one I swapped. Interestingly this was the newest looking one (grey top) we had 2 grey tops with no name on and 2 green tops with VALEO on - look like they have been in since car was new. Maybe buying pattern ones is not the best thing? although Renault wanted 42 for one.
They are not held in with a torx screw, it is a 10mm hex.
Oh, and if the boot lid lock motor fails buy a scenic one for half the price and just take the motor off and fit to the hatch back latch assy - you will need to put the electrical connector on the 'wrong' way round otherwise it will lock when it is supposed to un lock etc.

Re: Megane 1 faults

I just read most of the problems here and decided to post since we have 2 Meganes. The ones in bold are common problems.

1999 1.4 8 valve:
1. Windscreen washer motor. After some cold temperatures it wouldnt spray any washer fluid. i opened it up and cut down the the stopper thing that gets pushed from side to side and it worked fine. Recently, water would come out of the bottom of the car instead of the nozzles. Took the wheel off again and replaced a loose hose which I find has a design fault because the hose gets squashed during fitting the washer bottle.
2. Indicator Stork / Relays. There is a constant clicking sound when the indicators are off, it is a different sound to when the indicators are on. Indicators do work but they dont self cancel sometimes when you turn the steering wheel. Sometimes they dont even work all together. Headlamps are also problematic. No fix as of yet but I have replaced the relay. I think I need to open back part that the steering wheel goes on to.
2. Recirculating air blower flap. Common problem, please stop posting and read for the fix. When you turn the key it starts making knocking sounds because it is trying to close the flap so fumes dont come in.
Can replace the entire unit (very costly) or cable tie the flap open OR do what I did and simply unplug the flap so that its always recirculating or blowing fresh air. (not sure which, but it stops the darn knocking sounds)

3. Rear number plate lights work occasionally. fix: contacts were corroded, sanded it off and applied grease to prevent problem.
4.Rear driver side door does not work with central locking. Common problem with Meganes - all the locks are very poor. Haven't fixed it yet because it still locks/unlocks manually.
5. Rear interior lights only worked when jiggled about. Superglued the terminals to the housing as they had come loose.

2001 1.6 16 valve:
1. Boot door never locks. I took off the lock a few times, took it apart, put it back together. Works for a while then stops locking with the central locking. (door still opens and closes though). Will replace with a new lock from scrappy soon.
2. Engine mount (gearbox) had worn out. Replaced with new but non Renault part.
3. ABS / servo lights sometimes came on and braking was juddering. Replaced drive shafts
4. Headlights turn off when indicators are turned on. Indicator stork is very problematic, sometimes doesnt work at all.
5. Battery leads corroded. Replaced from scrappy.

Other things Megane buyers should be aware of:
Check that the headlights / indicators / electrics etc. work at the same time.
Check central locking works on all doors.
Inspect underside and wheel arches for corrosion/rust as Meganes dont hold up well if they're not garaged.

Arrow Re: Megane 1 faults

yeh hi i have 1998 megane S reg, 107,482k, not had any realy bad problems with it yet, BUT-no.1, i have noticed the engine starting to pulse when i hold clutch in at or approaching a junction, it cud be that im drawing too much power from battery (over loading alternater) but still a bit of a worry.

my accelorater peddle is quite tough to push down??? ive been told its common with renault not sure tho.

thats it really ive serviced the car myself, apart from the above no major issues.

Re: Megane 1 faults

Hi, how's it going?
The rear lights on my dads car where all coming on when braking or indicating.
Apparently the ground pin in the rear cluster is not able to carry all the current and burns out.
