I wanna build up a list ofMegane 1 faults so that anyone lookiong to buy one or in fact owns one needs to know what tends to go wrong.

so far the only major thing is the Recirculation flap in the dash

Hi Daniel

You mention here about Engine misfire and lack of power.(Traced to earthing fault on left hand side of engine near dip stick, not ECU) Can I ask what the symptoms were and how you fixed it. I am having issues with my Megane once it is upto temperature and I am hoping it might be something more simple than the ECU otherwise it may be going to the big Megane heaven in the sky.

Thanks

Tim

Hi Mcouchard

I'm having abit of trouble with my Megane at the moment once it is upto temerature. A few people have mentioned the TDC sensor, but I'm not sure where it is/ what it looks like and what can be done to help. can it be cleaned?/ reset?

Any help would be appreciated, the old Megane has done me well but at 95,000miles I dont really want to put it in a garage not really worth much expense.

Thanks

Wolsty

full coil pack replaced (all 4)
window wipers failed and needed a full 2 days attention?!
and now the abs light is on....

Hi all, just to let you know all sorted now. I cleaned the TDC sensor but this didn't help so bit the bullet and took it into my local garage and he diagnosed a faulty ignition coil and this has fixed it. £37 for the part and £37 for his time so not too much.
Happy motoring. 967000 miles so far, anyone know what happens to a renault when they go over the 100000? do they just stop?

#38 ·
No they don't stop after 100k miles!

My van (works van so its had a thrashing) is a Renualt (albeit with a Vauxhall badge) and that has clocked up over 210k miles pretty much trouble free in 4 years. There is a thread on here actually where folks post their high mileages - well over 100k is common :)

Look after your car and it will look after you - regardless of its marque :)

Help!!!!!

Hi all, got prob with me car, wonderd if any could help and if they had sim problem,

i have LR reg, Laguna, with the card key and puch button start etc,

yesterday i was driving it, and from nowhere it started juttering, it did this for half a mile, then stoped and was fine for rest of day,

then today i got in car, it started fine, and as i pulled out of drive it cut out, and i was left rolling down the hill,

i was sat in car for about 20mins trying to tart but noughting, just normall tickover then off, but once or twice the engine did pop, as if it was trying to start,

i rang my dad and he came to give me a tow home, as we were on the way back, i tried to bumpstart it, and it started straight away,

got back to my house, we had a look and couldent think of what could be wrong,
after which i tried going for a little run around, and all the car does now is jutter as if im loseing power but straight back on,

theres plenty of fuel, {half tank} i thought this at 1st, as when i was trying to start it was just trying to start but not,

now were thinking electicle ..........

sorry im just gabbering on now

Tbh i have no idea, and was hopeing you lads could help me lol,

ps. i hate cars lol.

Hurrah! Someone else has got it too. When I took it to the dealer he told me the part was 700 quid so i've lived with the "bang bang bang" when the car starts while the flaps work out where they are.

I've actaully ahd it so long I dont notice it anymore. Passengers get a bit scared though when it does it.

Has anyone managed to fix this problem?

mind blowing problems

it all started a yr ago when the temp guage would go up and down just upto half hot then back down again so we had the coolant cleaned out and replaced the sensor for that then over the last few months we have had intermitant probs with it over revving so bad at times reaching 3000 we had the map sensor replaced plus the pipe that leads to it as that had a split in it this seemed to cure it for a week then oh my god it came back with a vengance.
my partner has just took it to work as he is a parts manager for a peugeot dealer and the techi's hav had the throttle body off and cleaned it this made it worse causing the car to splutter and lose power so much so if he wasn't wearin his seat belt he wud hav been catapulted out the window.he has just mananged to get hold of a 2nd hand throttle body and has ordered to new coils to see if this will help plus get the master technision to check the earthing wires because apparently after time they can get down to t he last few threads so once the engine heats up this causes them to cut out which may explain the cutting out and spluttering thing.
hope this helps all you megane owners out there as no one relied to my original thread.

For me the weak points of this car is
1. Corrosion, it is not well protected in lower door panels, exhaust, etc.
2, Front suspension seems weak, you will always have some part that is pending replacement.
5. Seems to be having electrical issues, which are very hard to find & costly to solve.
3. Driving pleasure is minimal(sadly:loser:), clutch & gear changes are rough.
4. Battery is placed in the utmost inconvenient place

scenic faults

me thinks you would need to have a lot of space to list all the faults, most of them are well documented already on this site, broken shocks, top dead centre sensor , disc brake disc failure, fuel temp sensor, musnt forget the thermal fuse that controls the interior fan,.water in the footwells, the electric mirror switch that causes fires, broken drivers door electric window mechanisms,, and im sure most Renault owners will have experienced dodgy automatic transmissions, altogether not very impressive at all. and why would anyone put a battery inside the car under the drivers seat, (Scenic one) i suppose to see if the car rolled over landing on the roof, to see if the acid would run out over the driver, and of course the speedo that doesnt always work

If it's a maintenance manual your after,Haynes cover most of the Megane 1 range.

If it's an owners manual your after, there are plenty of used ones on eBay or you should be able to download one from the Renault UK site(there are more details on the forum,if you can't find them get back to us and we'll point you in the right direction).

Welcome to the forum by the way.:)

Megane 96 1.6 petrol 78000 miles, in past 18 months

Back door lock 1, solenoid failed (needed cleaning, long job) now second has failed.

Sunroof back gutters leaked into head lining, sealed with silicone.

Front nearside cv (thus also drive shaft), £200

Centre exhaust box (£58)

Expansion tank (£5) but probably failed (cracked) due to never having the coolant changed.

That 20 second immobiliser thing. Occasionally the radio will just go silent for a second and reset, minor niggle. Bit rusty, boot has weak gas struts.

Looks like a coil has now gone, but the car was cheep, think I'll go German or Scandinavian next.

Hey there I have a w reg 1.4e 8v megane and have been getting a whineing noise as i speed up the noise gets louder the greater the revs i wondered if you possibly knew anything about this problem.
Also to add i managed to reset my imobiliser but putting key in the igition turning the car on then off holding the door lock button on the dash cant remember if i had it in the lock or unlock position and that seemed to work never had a problem with the imobiliser again

I seriously loved mine, but in many ways it was the worst car I ever had as it was a money pit. The head gasket went three times in the cars life, once a previous owner, once with me then the second time with me when also the head cracked (which was my fault though, tbh ) At the time, nice cars to look at and decent to drive, but I think they have aged badly and really imo do look a bit bangerish nowadays, not so much the phase2 cars, but the early Megs are not not looking so good now and nearly every one I see has tinworm infestation of the rear wheel arches.

Sorry, just speaking my mind :) (back in a Vauxhall again now, ta!)

Cheers, Bob

Hi

I have a 1999 Renault megane facelift 1.6 RT sport.

For a few months i've heard a banging noise from underneath the car. I thought this was the exhaust since it's slightly loose, but despite my local garage trying to fix the problem, every time i drive on a bumpy road i can hear this banging noise.

It's such a shame, since the car has been problem free.

Any help regarding this would be very much appreciated.

Hi everyone,

I have just bought a 2004 Megane 1.9dci which seems to be quite juddery on first start up of the day, I wondered if anyone has the same problem? I am guessing the diesel preheat is not working properly, it runs perfectly after about 30 mins. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
