Re: Renault Megane - Radio And Time Display Bulb Replacement

Thanks to FrenchFanRTE.
I removed the 2 T20 screws under the speaker panels (the speakers are also held by 2 similar screws but you don't need to removes these). The whole dash is clipped in several places at the front. Use a broad bladed screwdriver to lever the front of the dash up. If the steering wheel is adjustable, move it down and then pull the whole dash up and out into the car. This uncovers the clock etc. display (held by 3 more T20 screws) remove these and you can get at the back of the unit to change the bulbs. The speedo etc. unit is also uncovered by removing the dash so bulb replacement here is achieved in the same way.

The whole job was easy-peasy - congrats to Renault for designing it so well.

The dash lifts off from the front and up then pull towards you. To access the bulbs there are three further screws holding the clock display in. It was a simple as you said and probably took me longer to get to halfords than to dismantle and put back together the dashboard. I got the tiny 12v 1.2 bulbs which cost 2.00 each. Working like a treat.

Bessy, following the instructions to change the bulbs was dead simple. My fault was the same as yours. You need a small star screwdriver bit and a couple of the teeny weeny bulbs. Halfords would fit the bulbs for 3.99 per bulb (including the bulb) but I am not sure if it included dismantling the dashboard.

Again, many thanks from a female whose first response is normally to run to my dad. I feel really chuffed that I did it myself.
are these the right batteries?

dont see why id need 10

Smile Re: Renault Megane - Radio And Time Display Bulb Replacement

I am in agreement with the other posters but do consider the scrap yard option. I recently purchased a Renault Megane Cabriolet 1998. The previous owner had cannibalised the stereo wiring loom to fit an awful after market stereo. The wiring loom is connected via the LCD display and joins both the stereo and the steering wheel remote with two connectors (1 red, 1 white sometimes blue). The top part of the dash is easy to remove. Pop the speaker covers and undo the two hex screws. Lift the top cover off the dash board to reveal the LCD display. I believe there are three retaining screws that need to be undone to remove the LCD display. In the first instance check the bulbs, but if the unit is fluctuating in brighteness it may be worth replacing the unit. I believe there were two variants of the dashboard display although they are both interchangeable. The original one in mine had two independent units for the clock and the radio display. I removed mine from a later Megane Classic 03 which has the newer single unit. Go to your local scrappy and tell them what you want. With luck they will let you into their yard to take out the units. Pick what looks like the best. You will probably find the units are identical across the Megane, Scenic & Clio range around the year of your vehicle. To take the best looking unit you can find and remove some spare bulbs whilst at the scrapyard. I paid 5 for my display but expect to pay upto 20.
