You may wish to check that the car is on the correct wheels & tyres. It doesn't sound excessively high, but I know what you mean about the effects on fuel consumption & engine wear. It has to be balanced out with the torque characteristics of the engine - it would be more frustrating (and ironically less economical), if 5th gear was very high, and necessitated a change down whenever you hit a slight incline.
This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
