You hit the nail on the head when you say the leather appears to have 'melted'. That describes the problem exactly. The stitching is fine.
I'm told a new wheel, fitted, will cost the thick end of £300 so I shall still pursue the dealer under the Sale of Goods Act. I'm not in the habit of paying several thousand pounds for faulty goods.
