As an ex-tannery worker I can tell you that all leather products need care to ensure their durability.
most leathers used in cars are normally chrome tanned and are in need of leather food (dubbin) regularly to ensure they dont crack/split etc.
most cars nowadays have aircon which dries the air and subsequently dries the leather making the need for dubbin even more important.
you may well find a good read of owners manual (small print) states this fact and this could be renaults "get-out" clause.
