spongy brakes on Modus

Hi I am new here and would love some help whilst trying to decide whether to buy this car...

I have just test driven a Modus 2006 1.5 diesel.. Everything was ok apart from slightly clunky gear change( probably just different to my previous ford focus) but worryingly soft brakes.. There is no real 'brake' until your foot is on the floor. I had a little suzuki that was similar, all brakes were fine, was told it was just that model..

The dealer has assured me that with new pads the braking will be firmer, with not so much play on the pedal and also because it has been standing the disks have oxidised so the contact will improve with use...
Does this sound correct?
He said he will get his mechanic to change pads and disks if necessary, but I am worried this wont make a difference and I'll be left with soft brakes..
Help!! I need to make a decision..
Thank you..
