Renaults are notorious for two kinds of problems: The first being cranky electrics, the second being unreliable automatic gearboxes. I've no personal experience of the autos, but then I've had enough trouble with the manuals (first Laguna did 120,000 without problems, second required a gearbox rebuild at 101,000 and the current one got a new box at 70,000 although that was only because the old box became noisy after losing all of its oil .)

As for the auto boxes, I've heard and read enough to warn anyone off buying a Renault with one. If you must, then take out the best warranty you can get your mitts on (and make sure it covers the box) or budget for a new one somewhere before you hit 50,000 miles.
