I would be inclined to put more faith in the trip counter, as the fuel guage is really just an estimate (usually quite accurate), but the sender unit is an item which can fail without warning and leave you with no fuel in the tank, but a guage showing a quarter full. The trip counter is again estimating (but its the fuel which has been used, rather than what's left in the tank). Another thing worth remembering, is that the volume of fuel can vary according to temperature (i.e. less volume at lower temperatures, more at higher temps), so there's even a degree of variance arising there.
