It could just be that running the battery flat has finally seen it off. This is far from unheard of on older batteries.

Don't forget to turn the side lights on before connecting the new battery, as this reduces the risk of the dash being spiked and the trip computer switching permanently to the metric display.

As for the hazard light switch, the one on my last Lag did exactly the same thing. A good hard thump would make it latch into place, though as the car was under warranty, I got it replaced at the next service.
