The warranty is most useful when your having discussions with our "chums" at
... if its still in warranty or as you have suggested just out most dealers worth their salt and
will do the work under "goodwill" but may ask for a contribution .... usually negioatiable esp. if you have a tantrum at the service desk at 17:00 when the world is trying to collect their cars.
If its just out (and less than 1000 miles) I'd still be tempted to go down the franchised route, but your point on specialists is spot-on, but finding them is usually the problem.
Let us all know how you get on .... esp if you find a good independant.
PS remember "out of warranty" does not preclude the dealer from fixing the problem FOC esp. if it is a "pre" failure ... if you have a problem read up on your consumer rights.
