Hi Paul
Firstly, I'll quickly update my issue:
Renault gave me the wrong code - it's better to deal with the guys in the workshop if you can, as opposed to counter staff.
My key fob does have a code printed on its circuit board which tallies with the original immobiliser codes as kept on renault's file. I have bypassed the immob which as you point out renders all of its functions null - no remote central locking which is a real pain, but I don't have to enter the code each time
The fact that the bypass code works is a good sign - it means the units are probably functioning, just out of sync - my local Renault charges £50 diagnosis fee and £50 per hour + parts - it seems they are probably the only people with the equipment and codes to rephase the immob and get itworking again, should I so desire. It should certainly be no more than an hours work. As for using more than one key you'd have to ask them.
Good luck
