The sensors themselves are located in the tyre valve - the control box (receiver/transmitter) is underneath the car outside.

As vass correctly says driving through big puddles etc can temporarily cause a false reading if the connections get a soaking.
Don't know whether Renault have improved the waterproofing or relocated the trasnmitter.receiver module but ours work fine even in the pooring rain!
