Thanks Paulus - for the amount of time I would use them, I think the Thule bars would be ok.

I take the point about the step ladder; during a recent hosepipe ban, the local carwash closed so i was cleaning the car myself - it went around for a few weeks with a mohican as i couldn't reach the middle bit!
