Megane Speedometer Woe (a bit long...)

Vehicle: 1999 Renault Megane RN 1.4e; Factory type BAOE.

I have already checked the forum and, although there are references to similar problems, mine looks sufficiently different (to me) that it warrants a new thread. I have tried the ‘self-test’ button but there’s no response – I think the vehicle may be just a bit basic for that to work.

Problem: All is fine for three to five miles, then the speedometer dies. Sometimes the ‘fault’ telltale light comes on, sometimes it doesn’t. If it does come on the engine idle speed drops and can be erratic. If not, the car runs more or less normally. The speedometer may put in an appearance now and again during a long run.

History: everything was fine until the camshaft timing belt broke. (I know that doesn’t have anything to do with this problem but it provides a starting point.) The car went for repair to a non-specialist garage (we’d been using them for years) who sorted out the engine problem. For a while things were OK then the speedo started dropping out occasionally. It has become worse over a while until now it behaves as noted above.

Thoughts: the thing works fine at the beginning of the day so I’m reluctant to believe that any particular component is at fault. The time it takes for the speedometer to ‘fail’ also seems to vary with temperature – the warmer the weather, the quicker it fails - so I am of the opinion that there is some sort of intermittent bad connection or earth point. As the engine idle also seems to be affected at times I wonder if it is possible that some part of the engine management wiring might have been affected when the car was being repaired.

That’s all conjecture; I hope that someone might be able to help fix this – or at least point me in the right direction – as it looks like the kind of thing that could cost a small fortune just to diagnose. I have been playing with cars for over 30 years so I’m not afraid to get my hands grubby…
