To be honest, if you already have a perfectly good stereo, I wouldn't go chucking money at it just for the sake of the steering remote.
I transferred a Kenwood Radio/Cassette and 10 disc changer system from my Mazda to my first Laguna. I missed having the display and the remote for all of about two days, then I got used to having to use it via the fornt panel.
If you really do want the remote, then it might be worth going for a system that'll also drive the built-in display. You're right in thinking that you'll need an interface that's specifc to the stereo and the car as you did with the Vectra.
Another route you could consider is adding a CD changer to the existing head unit. That'd let you keep the remote and display, and might not end up costing any more than a decent after-market head unit.
