The plot thickens with this fault. Car went in to a local garage today who (like me) could not clear the fault code for the parking brake. However, they did confirm that the brake is going to ground when it releases i.e. looks like one of the sensors is not working and therefore the brake only stops releasing when the magnet/sensor hits ground at the end of the travel.
Upshot is, it looks like one of the sensors has gone down and the unit will need removing and sending away to be tested/repaired. Garage estimate @£200+Vat to get it fixed with a 1-2 week turnaround
