Yep, if it's a 2 litre, then it might be the dreaded IDE . It started out as the 2.0 16v engine in some of the Meganes before being adopted for the Laguna II. A forum search for " IDE " will turn up heated discussion about this particular engine.

Not all IDE 's are problematic mind you. Far from it, in fact - most people who have them don't have any problems beyond the usual that you'd expect from any engine. But if the car has the IDE , make sure you go into the deal with your eyes open and knowing the risks.

Lumpy idle is generally the first sign of death rattle in the IDE , so if it is this engine and the idle is rough, walk away. Though it has to be said that direct injection engines tend to be louder than most others at tick-over, so don't concentrate too much on the loudness, just the smoothness.
