The tray, for one, keeps the engine bay clean and more importantly helps stop dirt getting into the various pully's and cambelt area.

The tray apparently also helps the cooling system by creating a sort of pressure behind it which allows the engine to cool more efficiently.

Finally, the tray also helps the aerodynamics of the car. You may not notice it during day to day running, but on tests conducted on a Fiat Coupe with and without the tray, the top speed was actually increased by 8mph with the tray ON.

I take your point aboiut the quality of the bolts etc though.
