Sounds like you might have a broken or damaged ABS wheel speed sensor ring.

When the ABS light is on it means the system is disabled,so it has to be connected to the ABS some how.There are castelated rings on all of the wheel hubs somewhere and these can split causing confusing messages to go to the ABS ECU .It thinks a wheel is locking up under braking(although it's not), and activates the system.After a while the ECU gets confused and switches off which is when the ABS light is illuminated.

I'd get the ABS fault codes read when the light is on and go from there.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
