Sadly Honda never concentrated on fuel economy but thankfully concentrated on reliability and function.

My experience of Honda is that it does exactly what it says on the tin -no more - no less. Also spares can be pricey - even after-market components.

In the past 3 years of owning my Civic apart from routine servicing the only extra required was a new battery (70-00) which cost the same as a battery for my previous Lag II diesel and even that was a non-Honda one. The batteries are small but pack a punch.
i did notice they only do max around 35mpg the freelander is getting 40mpg but being as its not an every day main car as the mrs drives the mgf and me the van when its running mpg is not a problem
