Smile abs ring changeover

I want to change the abs ring due to damage. do I have to remove the long bit that holds the wheel on. the axle thingy that the ring goes on. I have to hammer or tap the ring on, can I do this without removing the stick like object that connects the wheel to the car. I want to remove the wheel, the disc brake and that will allow me access to the abs ring. it is snapped. i can remove the ring, clean up the surface area and tap on a new one without removing anything else?
or could this damage bearings or other bits as a result of the tapping process(using a rubber mallet)

Christmas tomorrow. yay
